How HIV Is Transmitted?
Transmission Prevention
How HIV is transmitted?
- Through sexual intercourse ―vaginal, anal, oral― without the use of a condom, with someone who is HIV+
- By sharing a syringe, needle or other equipment for the use of drugs with someone who is HIV+
- From a mother who is HIV+ to her baby during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding.
How HIV is not transmitted?
- Through social contact (hugging, shaking hands, kissing on the cheek)
- Through daily interactions at home, at work, at school, at the theatre etc.
- From clothes, towels, cups, plates, cutlery
- By swimming in the sea or a pool
- From the toilet
- From animals or insects
How can I protect myself from HIV?
- As you cannot know who has the virus, judging by their appearance, use a latex condom at every sexual encounter whether it is vaginal, anal or oral. Remember, once is enough. AIDS does not discriminate. Do not be shy, take initiative.
- If you use drugs, always use your own syringe, needle or other equipment. Do not share with others.
- Do not share with others objects with blood stains on them, such as toothbrushes or razors.
- In case of a pregnancy, ask your doctor for information on HIV.
